ILOILO CITY, Philippines—Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, a key ally of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and chairman of the League of Cities of the Philippines, has bolted the administration party, Lakas-Kampi-CMD to run for congressman of the city’s lone district.
In a press conference Tuesday, Treñas said he would run against Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr., son and namesake of Chief Presidential legal Counsel Raul Gonzalez, because of the “clamor” of various sectors.
He said he has not decided what party to align with.
But he mentioned that his grandfather, former senator Potenciano Treñas, was with the Nacionalista Party while his father, Constitutional Convention Commissioner Efraim Treñas was a Liberal Party member.
